JUNE 23RD - AN EVENT FORGOTTEN BY ALMOST EVERYBODY

25-year anniversary of the inauguration of the Bucharest Stock Exchange

The launch of the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) on June 23, 1995, is not recorded on Wikipedia.

The website mentions that, on June 23, 1937, Felix Ţopescu, the father of well-known television sports caster, Cristian Ţopescu, won the "Daily Mail" Trophy at the London equestrian competition and mentions that, seven years later, on June 23, 1944, Thomas Mann became an American citizen.

There are events that Wikipedia mentions.

On June 23, 1992, American gangster John Gotti was sentenced to life in prison - yes, it's important and it's written on Wikipedia, but on June 23, 1995, when the Bucharest Stock Exchange was inaugurated, nothing important enough for Wikipedia to record happened.

Instead, it writes that, on June 23, 2006, the first concert of Depeche Mode took place in Romania.

Depeche Mode, is there, the BSE isn't.

Is it an oversight by Wikipedia?

The inauguration took place at the National Bank of Romania, at noon.

Bright day.

Warm.

No protocol at all.

Entering through Lipscani Street.

We're going up the stairs, there's a queue.

At the wrought-iron gate, inside, customs-like control - three men and a woman.

I take their picture - snap, snap!

Predictably, they get upset at me.

They try to seize my camera.

I pull myself away and laugh.

A fifth person shows up, their superior.

Those behind me push me, I'm left alone.

That was about it for the fun part.

The room is full of suits and neckties.

Iliescu, Văcăroiu, Coşea, Isărescu, Stere Farmache (and the one who in 2000 would be shamefully arrested, CNVM chairman of ill repute Ştefan Boboc).

I don't know the others.

The ones I do know make speeches and of course, they're saying nothing - it's the proper thing to do at inaugurations.

I take pictures - it's a film camera, I've stored the pictures in a blue cardboard box, on my lower shelf, they've gotten lost over a quarter of a century.

I regret the pictures with the people from the "Securitate", they haven't helped me in any way.

I also had pictures from the set-up of the area inside the NBR meant to host the BSE, they were in black and white.

But no transaction happened on that day.

There were sandwiches and cookies, but no action.

In fact, the Exchange wasn't ready.

None of those who were in attendance were ready.

After five months, on November 20, 1995, when the first trading day happened, on the poster of the BSE there were 12 issuers, of which 11 had been brought in by Petru Prunea.

When I later read the report by a news agency that on Monday, June 26 1995, the Moldovan Stock Exchange was opened in Kishinev, I realized that the authorities pulled a fast one on us.

The Stock Exchange of Moldova wasn't "inaugurated", it was "opened", meaning transactions happened on the first day.

Romania was in a hurry "to inaugurate" the exchange formally, through a ceremony devoid of content, three days before the Republic of Moldova effectively launched its stock exchange.

Just so it isn't found out that the Republic of Moldova came before Romania...

Therefore, the fact that Wikipedia does not record that anything happened on June 23, 1995 seems to coincide with the fair judgment of history - no, at that time the only thing that happened was a shameful masquerade.

The heads of the Exchange at the time weren't to blame for any of it.

On the contrary, from the time trading began, in autumn, the BSE has behaved like a serious institution, abiding by the laws as well as the principles of the market, consolidating its honorable character which subsequently led to it competing with the over-the-counter market called Rasdaq (about the latter, BURSA argued that it was an illegal market - a conclusion reached by the European Commission a decade later).

However, the absence of the date of June 23, 1995 from Wikipedia is probably not a coincidence: the presentation text of the BSE, on the website, seems to have been drafted by the BSE representatives themselves and it is very possible that they did not know the detail, just like sometimes people's memory erases embarrassing events.

"After almost 50 years, the Bucharest Stock Exchange was re-established in 1995, the first trading session taking place on November 20, 1995", writes in Wikipedia, which, on the other hand, in the chapter dedicated to the Stock Exchange of Moldova, writes: "The first negotiations took place on June 26, 1995, considered the" birth "day of the Moldovan Stock Exchange."

That is, the farce in Bucharest did not even reach its target: the history of Wikipedia records that Moldova beat Romania, when it comes to establishing a stock exchange.

NOTE

A private news agency, which also reports on things that happened in history on a specific day, what happened in history, records June 23, 1995 as the date on which ... "The Bucharest Commodity Exchange was opened".

You don't even know what to say, does the agency have a leg up on Wikipedia, because it knows that something happened then, or is it worse off, because what it is saying is wrong?
